A PLAYGROUND BETWEEN FREEDOM AND RADICALITY
Dedicated to championing contemporary Malagasy art, Hakanto Contemporary was established in 2020 by Joël Andrianomearisoa and Hasnaine Yavarhoussen, extending the momentum created by the first-ever Malagasy Pavilion at the 58th International Art Exhibition – Venice Biennale in 2019, conceived by Joël Andrianomearisoa.
In February 2020, Hakanto Contemporary opened in Antananarivo.
Conceived as an independent platform for exhibitions, encounters and critical reflection, it serves as a space for artistic expression and dialogue between the Malagasy contemporary scene and the wider world, fostering an ongoing exchange between local creativity and international artistic practices.
Inspired by the exceptional momentum sparked by this pivotal moment, the two founders chose to carry this vision forward, establishing a long-term commitment to nurturing and strengthening Madagascar's contemporary art ecosystem.
Hakanto Contemporary welcomes artists from Madagascar and beyond, fostering encounters with those who seek to engage with, explore and critically examine the territory through contemporary artistic practices.
Designed by Joël Andrianomearisoa, the space is defined by a sober and radical architectural vision.
The raw materiality of concrete converses with the elegance of expansive black surfaces, shaping a distinctive environment marked by both modernity and depth.
Retaining its industrial spirit while affirming a powerful artistic identity, the venue was conceived as a place to host seasons, exhibitions and artistic projects, offering a dynamic setting for contemporary creation and exchange.
A PLACE FOR ARTISTIC MOMENTUM AND ENCOUNTER
Beyond its exhibitions, Hakanto Contemporary has progressively broadened its programme to include residencies, workshops, conferences and public encounters.
More than a place for exhibiting art, Hakanto Contemporary has emerged as a driving force for contemporary creation, artistic exchange and cultural dialogue.
Accompanied by the Fond Yavarhoussen, Hakanto Contemporary operates as a laboratory for exploration and experimentation—a space where artists are invited to question, invent and continually challenge the boundaries of artistic practice.
FOREWORD BY THE PRESIDENTS
"The plurality of spaces allows us to imagine our programme through different temporalities. The major exhibitions will change roughly every six months, while the projects presented within the three modules will remain more fluid and adaptable.
Having access to such a vast and versatile playground is immensely stimulating. It gives us the opportunity to push our commitment to contemporary creation even further and to support artists with ever greater ambition."
